Facebook needs to invest heavily in developing filtering mechanisms because they want to be the hub for everything that everyone does. Twitter—thus far, anyway—has very different mindset and goals, and I question whether the data and filtering issues that Twitter encounters as the service grows will be the same as the issues that Facebook is dealing with.
